Just a note, you get this book free when you sign up to take the Wilton Cake Class Course 1 (at least you do at Michael's Arts & Crafts where I took mine)

The book is easy to understand, pictures are literally step by step and include instruction such as "offhand," meaning it will tell you that something should resemble an ice cream cone or look like a behive, to swirl here, or lightly brush here, sweeping motion, etc. I found it very refreshing not to all be spoken in terms that only people who attended culinary school would understand. It also shows you the pictures of suggested supplies you will need in the beginning of the book so your not running back to the store each time you start a new segment.

I would suggest just taking the class because on top of getting the book free, you do get a lot more tips and advice from the instructor that you can jot down in the ample space imbetween pictures and notes in the book. But if you too busy or there isn't a class scheduled near you, this book would certainly suffice in helping you get started!

I just begin a Wilton cake decorating class #1 at Michael's, and this book comes FREE with the class which is (instructor says these course books should retail about -5 at most).

You should take the class in addition to read this book, the experience of live teaching by an experienced instructor is invaluable. During this class, you will learn the beginner cake decoration techniques. It's a lot of fun, and if you don't want to proceed onto course II or III, it should be fine with just decorating your average cupcake, cookies and basic cakes. [[though most people love it so much that they do advance on..]]

however, I do have to caution that the course I tool kit you can buy (.99 @ Michael's) is only the bare minimum, it does not have all the things you will need for the first class. so be prepared to develop this hobby and pay more (~-40 depending on what you want) for other tool/tips/bags....

I love this product. It makes it very easy to decorate the sides of my cakes so they look fabulous. I am not the most creative person- and my cakes often show it- not anymore! My only complaint, although minor, is that you have to add a fairly thick layer of thinner consistency icing for the tool to work easily. Otherwise it pulls the edges right out of the holder. Once I discovered this trick I was very pleased!

I recently started taking the Wilton cake-decorating classes at my local craft stores. My instructor said she had never used this product. I ordered it and tried it. It is the niftiest little gadget. Be sure to read the instructions. The icing needs to be at least ½ inch think where you use this and it takes a little practice to master using it, but the results are worth it. I have used it both on the sides of my cakes and on top as background texture. I got more complements using this then when I just iced and decorated the cakes. If you are into or getting into cake decorating, defiantly get this. You will not regret it!

If you have experience however you will not be that happy w/it. It covers everything from what tips to use, to how to make buttercream frosting, to using royal icing. If you are just starting out, then grab this one!!!!

This book (and the others in the series) sells for under in JoAnne's. Amazon is ripping you off at . Know why it's so cheap? It's only about 30 pages, and much of the book is advertising for their products.

OK, it does have some good information and helpful photos, and you can learn how to do some tricky stuff with it, but don't assume the price is right at Amazon.

I have only used this product a handful of times, but it does make icing a cake much, much easier. The cake turner can also be locked into a stable position and used as a cake stand. My husband really hates the green color, but I find it rather retro. As for cleaning it, the product comes apart easily and reassembles just as easily. I would buy it again as the product does exactly what it claims to do.

I just had an opportunity to use this product and was pretty happy with it. I do cakes for friends and family and found it worked pretty good. The only concern I had is this - I bought it because I am doing another wedding cake in 6 weeks and have always wanted one to make it easier to decorate the cakes. I am concerned that after using it to decorate around the edge of a 10" cake, it won't work for anything much large than that. It turned okay, but felt a little stiff from the weight of the cake. I think that any larger and the cake will be too heavy to turn well. That is the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. I would have liked it to turn a 12" and 14" cake very easily and I don't expect that will happen after doing the 10" do to the increased weight of the cake as it gets larger. If you do cakes that are 8" or 10" then you will probably love this item.

I am sorry to hear that the previous reviewer had such a bad experience with her caddy- because I absolutely love mine!

I have severe arthritis and the locks on the side are easy enough for even me to use! If I take the recomended step of dabbing a dot of frosting down before I place my goodies on the tray they don't slide around at all anymore!

The unit seals tightly keeping my goodies fresher longer (I use my glass cake dome and cakes go stale in one day).

As for clean up- I throw it in the dishwasher and it cleans like a dream. I will admit though that being a cake decorator I always decorate my cakes on a cardboard round (I actually use reusable disks that my hubby cut for me that I cover with wrapping paper to look good)- the reason I am rambling about this is that I don't cut cakes directly on the base (or any other cake plate for that matter) so it never really gets that dirty anyway.

Bottom line: I use the heck out of my cake caddy!

I was disappointed that it holds a cake 10" x 4", which is not in the product description. Once I received it, I saw the cake dimensions on the manufacturer's label. I thought it could be used for higher layer cakes.
